Quilting as an art + personal color theory
In this 1-2 hour class, students will see a small trunk show of Liberty’s work and hear about how quilts are both art and craft.
Subjects discussed: color theory, design by blocks (using half-square triangles), construction of quilts
Exercises: volunteers will design a quilt on a small design wall in black and white and then students will use provided paper grids and pre-cut triangles to design and glue their very own quilts.
Age: This class is suitable for students 2nd grade though 12th grade.
Trunk Show and beginning quilting
1-3 hour class meant for schools which have students with beginning sewing knowledge
Subjects discussed: how to design a quilt using blocks, wonky squares and/or traditional block style
Age - suitable for 6-12th grade
Mixed media
In this 1-3 hour class, students will begin with a slide show of collaged artworks including some important historical works as well as some of Liberty’s work and hear about how mixed media is a viable art form.
Subjects discussed: color theory, design themes, collage in Art History, using collage as a personal narrative tool, transfers
Exercises: students start with limited materials on small pieces on paper. They build their confidence and their work, with guidance from Liberty, to a mixed media piece (either on paper or canvas) that uses all of the tools during the class.
Age: This class is suitable for students 4th grade though 12th grade.
Magazine Mosaics for all
In this 1-2 hour class, students will learn about the fun practice of collage with magazine images - using color fields in place of paint to make images.
When geared for younger students, there will be a few images from Art History shown - works by Romare Bearden, Henri Matisse and Eric Carle as well as some personal work by Liberty Worth. More advanced students will learn a little more about other notable collage artists.
Exercises: working from a theme, students will use scissors and glue to create magazine mosaic paintings. This can be adapted and integrated to any theme they are studying in other subjects.
Age: This class is suitable for students preschool-12th grade.
